A BOOK OF PAGES
GALLERY GOER
In response to The Sun newspaper’s Page 3 article about the artist Anthony Key’s Lottery funded exhibition including a display of pork scratchings, I creating an image of a ‘glamour’ style model employed to take art to the masses. This unlikely combination highlights the article’s critique of the Arts Council of England that controls the distribution of funds to the arts. What governs “what is art?” and “what is worthy of institutional support?” are being scrutinised, whilst using the tactics employed by tabloid mass media (one with a certain distain) that also governs a populist view of art and culture. The artwork also addresses the form and the function of the FLUX magazine pages, intervening amongst the self-conscious images of fashion and beauty.
